"Boukas's arrangements of Jacob do Bandolim's music as performed by the New School Brazilian Choro Ensemble are a joy to hear. An inadvertent listener would not be able to tell if these are Brazilian players or not. The subtle accents of interpretation, melodic ornaments for which Jacob was famous and creative improvisations over the Choro language are the highlights of this project. Boukas' dedication coupled with his extraordinary musicality ensures that everything he does is always meticulously prepared and impeccably presented."

Cabuloso/Radamés Gnattali

On December 8, 2017, The New School Brazilian Choro Ensemble presented a landmark concert program celebrating the centennial of legendary Choro mandolinist-composer Jacob do Bandolim. The performance took place at New School for the Performing Arts

SEMPRE JACOB presents several of Jacob's most heralded compositions alongside pieces by Ernesto Nazareth, Pixinguinha, Radamés Gnattali, Luperce Miranda, Paulinho da Viola and Richard Boukas's own tribute bearing the name of the program.

Conceived and created by Boukas during the preceding summer, Sempre Jacob's fourteen arrangements were crafted from hundreds of hours of meticulous preparation including transcription from original recordings and a creative approach balancing authentic Choro performance practice with contrapuntal chamber music.

COMPLETE AUDIO is on PLAYLIST to the left.

COMPLETE VIDEO is on its own dedicated page.
