$30.00

Called "The Champion in dedication to master Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal, this 2011 work premiered by PUBLIQuartet has already received high acclaim from numerous string quartets and chamber music enthusiasts. The first movement, Despedaçado, (lit. "broken into pieces", refers to the motivic fragmentation of the original theme upon which the piece is based. It is far less tonal than most of Boukas's other chamber works, which show strong Brazilian influences. The second movement, Expansão, (Expansion) is loosely based on the southern Brazilian dance form known as guarânia. Visit the Chamber music subpage under Compositions to hear the entire quartet.

  2. SINCERAMENTE: A lyrical slow choro which illustrates the more romantic side of this genre, the piece unfolds in two thematic sections followed by solos, development and recapitulation.

The above two pieces can be heard performed by the Lamont Quartet on Composition/Chamber Music page.

  1. POR DO SOL: A Brazilian toada (a ballad form from the Northeast) which captures some of the darker harmonies and melodic gestures of composer-guitarist Guinga.
