Richard Boukas has been leading contemporary jazz and Brazilian music ensembles for forty years. He has fronted cutting-edge duos, trios and quartets featuring his original compositions and arrangements of existing repertoire.
Performances include notable concert venues, festivals and numerous libraries and educational institutions.
• Diálogos Duo was formed in 2016 to present Richard Boukas' contemporary BRAZILIAN works for clarinet (bass clarinet) and guitar. Featuring virtuoso French clarinetist Louis Arques, the Duo has released two CDs. Their original repertoire comprises 67 movements (7 suites), the largest body of contemporary Brazilian music written for clarinet and guitar.
• Quarteto Moderno was formed in 2008, the ensemble features the brilliant woodwind virtuoso Lucas Pino and an itinerant rhythm section: bassist Gustavo Amarante and drummer Maurício Zottarelli. Boukas's compositions traverse all major Brazilian genres including samba, choro, baião, marcha, frevo, maracatu and guarânia.
• Trio Brasiliero originated in the early 1990's, featuring the elite Brazilian bassists and drummers in the New York area. Richard is joined by Quarteto Moderno bassist Gustavo Amarante and drummer Maurício Zottarelli. Their repertoire consists of original compositions and fresh interpretations from the Brazilian Songbook: Jobim, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta, Sérgio Santos and legendary guitarists: Luiz Bonfá, Baden Powell, Guinga, Rafael Rabello.
• Duo Brasileiro features Richard Boukas and bassist Gustavo Amarante. Their repertoire is similar to Trio Brasileiro and they perform in more intimate venues.
