Richard Boukas has been leading contemporary jazz and Brazilian music ensembles for more than thirty-five years. He has fronted cutting-edge duos, trios and quartets featuring his original compositions and arrangements.
Quarteto Moderno Formed in 2008, the ensemble features the brilliant woodwind virtuoso Lucas Pino and an itinerant rhythm section: bassist Gustavo Amarante and drummer Maurício Zottarelli. Boukas's compositions traverse all major Brazilian genres including samba, choro, baião, marcha, frevo, maracatu and guarânia.
Their performances include not only notable concert venues and festivals, but concerts in libraries and educational institutions.
Trio Brasiliero has existed since the early 1990's, featuring among the best Brazilian bassists and drummers in the New York area. Richard is joined by his Quarteto Moderno bassist Gustavo Amarante and drummer Maurício Zottarelli. Their repertoire consists of both original compositions and fresh interpretations from the Brazilian Songbook (Jobim, Chico Buarque), heralded composers from Minas Gerais (Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta, Sérgio Santos), and legendary guitarists (Luiz Bonfá, Baden Powell, Guinga, Rafael Rabello).
Diálogos Brazilian Duo was formed in late 2016 to present Richard Boukas' prolific BRAZILIAN CHAMBER works for clarinet (bass clarinet) and guitar. Featuring virtuoso French clarinetist Louis Arques, the duo has presented two seven-movement cycles, Diálogos for Clarinet and Guitar and Diálogos for Bass Clarinet and Guitar. The Duo plans to record in fall 2017.
Law - Boukas Duo was formed in 2016 to explore the exciting world of contemporary BRAZILIAN CHAMBER MUSIC. Featuring itinerant cellist WENDY LAW and RICHARD BOUKAS on guitar and vocals, programs present Richard's original compositions and timeless masterpieces from Brazil's rich chamber and Choro traditions.
