This release includes the following works:
Chorizinho (2016) which was originally composed for Boukas's acclaimed Brazilian Jazz ensemble QUARTETO MODERNO and adapted for La Catrina String Quartet.
String Quartet "O Campeão" (the Champion, 2012) dedicated to Brazilian genius Hermeto Pascoal. A work of two contrasting movements- a lively Brazilian guarânia and non-tonal sonorities grounded in late Bartók string quartets. Commissioned and recorded by PUBLIQuartet.
Por do Sol for Flute and String Quartet (sunset, 2010) a Brazilian toada set in lush impressionist textures, featuring flautist Chia-Ching Mao on flute.
Trio Nordestino for Marimba, Violoncello and Guitar (2011) explores modal roots of traditional music in northeast Brazil and numerous textural possibilities with this novel instrument combination. The driving baião theme is interlaced with lyrical episodes. Boukas is performing the guitar part, joined by Derek Kwan (marimba) and Jiliane Russo (violoncello).
Choro Sinfônia for String Quartet (1999) A seven-movement work based on Chopin's Nocturne in Eb major, Op.9 no 2. Composed for the Modern Mandolin Quartet and later adapted for string quartet, the piece transforms Chopin's theme into spirited Brazilian choro and a set of five variations.
